Equalities and population groups

Oxfordshire contains a diverse and varied population.  This page provides data and resources about Oxfordshire’s residents and communities including the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010.

Age

In the 2023 mid-year estimates; The number of Children, aged under 18 in Oxfordshire was 152,500 and make up 20% of the total population.  Working age people aged 18 to 64 was 460,660 (61%) and older people, aged 65 and over was 137,070 (18%) are 65 or older in the 2023 mid-year estimates. Disability and unpaid carers

According to Census 2021 there was a total of 105,482 (14.5%) residents in Oxfordshire who reported that they are disabled under the Equality Act. Data about disability in the districts as well as the impact on daily activities is included in the Disability post.

Sex, Sexual orientation and Gender identity

It is estimated that 379,770 (50.6%) of Oxfordshire residents are female and 370,450 (49.4%) are male in the 2023 Mid-year estimates. See the current population page for breakdown by age and smaller areas.

88.4% of the county identify as straight or heterosexual (526,306) in the 2021 census, this percentage was lower than the national average of (89.4%). 3.4% of the county did not identify as straight or heterosexual (21,428). The remaining 7.9% (47,299) of the county did not answer the question. For district and detailed information see the Sexual orientation post.

3,476 (0.6%) Oxfordshire residents aged 16+ identify with a gender which differs from their sex registered at birth in the 2021 census. Our  Gender identity post provides a more detailed breakdown.

Marriage and civil partnership

Pregnancy and maternity

Ethnicity

23.2% of Oxfordshire’s residents come from non-white British backgrounds according to Census 2021. This is up from 16.4% at the last Census in 2011. For further breakdown by ethnic groups and district see Ethnicity post.

Religion and belief

At the time of the 2021 census the religious makeup of Oxfordshire residents was:

  • 47.3% of Oxfordshire’s residents are Christian
  • 40.0% had no religion
  • 3.2% are Muslim
  • 0.9% Hindu
  • 0.5% Buddhist
  • 1.1% follow other religions
  • 6.9% did not answer this question.

Armed Forces Veterans

Census 2021 results show that, as of March 2021, there was a total of 23,541 residents of Oxfordshire who had previously served in the UK armed forces. More information can be found in our Census 2021 Armed Forces Veterans post.

Language

In the 2021 Census about 9% of the Oxfordshire population indicated that English was not their main language. For more information about the languages spoken see our Languages post.
